“The worlds in space are as countless as all the grains of sand on all the beaches of the earth.” –Carl Sagan
Grains of sand trickle through his fingers as swirls of numbers cloud his thoughts. No longer resting, Charlie’s weary brain churns with equations, previously pushed under, now re-surfacing with a vengeance.
A shadow assails his fugue, crackling the edges of his focus. Eyes narrowed, Charlie gazes up through the glittering nimbus of calculations. His breath catches on Billy’s familiar outline, obscured in darkness except for the red-gold flare of sunlight tangled in his hair, backlit in an aura of incandescent brilliance.
They are multiplicative inverses- opposite but reciprocal- fractions made whole when combined. And no one understands, save his champion, but Charlie doesn’t care. He is a man comprised of complexities, dwelling in the infinite planes ubiquitous behind his eyes. But then his name is a smirk on Billy’s lips, and Charlie awakens to this moment. His lover’s touch grounds him, distilling all the numbers down to one. Billy is his center, golden bright, warming Charlie in the delicious rays of his ardor.
Sand dots Billy’s wet skin in clusters of irregular galaxies. Charlie’s hands gravitate towards them, his fingers scattering the grainy nebulas as he pulls Billy down. Hot whispers rasp in Charlie’s ear as he writhes under the expanse of his lover’s body stretched above him. Charlie scrapes salt crystal spirals off Billy’s jaw with his teeth, mouthing well-mapped constellations of freckles vivid on Billy’s sun-ripened skin. The grit of the universe under Charlie’s tongue tastes sharp and salty, like the earth beneath them that shifts with every rise and fall. Billy’s slick mouth inflames his skin until nothing remains of the numbers but vapor, curling and evaporating like steam. They rock together with limbs entwined, pleasure pounding in concert with the surf. A wave of bliss rolls through him, vibrating out and up into the endless sky.
